All the ones I am familiar with were very magnetic. But I haven't removed a wheel speed sensor since the e46 3 series and e53 X5 so things may have changed. EDIT: Turns out they have changed, found this on an X3 forum, WSS have changed from Hal effect apparently. He solved (same code as yours) by replacing the indicated WSS as he was unable to read the wave form being generated by the newer style sensor. INPA should show live data on the sensors though if you have access.

My wife's "new" 2015 35d just hit 85k and a trans service is coming up for that one. I'll have to have a look around and be careful as I planned on raising the Xfer case a tad as well. Maybe I'll lower the cross brace instead. I do have a small tool that I used on the E70 pan for those 3 bolts but I haven't been under it to look around yet as there are ~100 8mm fasteners to remove to take off all the bottom shields. So not sure on definite course of action yet.

Did you perform your trans service on a lift or jack stands?
