ATF in the oil? I heard about those kinds of shenanigans from the old school chevy forums. I've also read people suggesting using diesel motor oil because it does a better job of cleaning.
Having lived a good portion of my life south of the US border you get to see a lot of interesting solutions, mind you they're usually applied when you're broken down on a dirt jungle road but either way they're used.
