BMW'S are whiny bitches when it comes to voltage. Having a battery that has the voltage and the ability handle a load is a must. You can have a battery that won't handle a load but still has the right voltage. Always start with power whenever you're getting screwy lights, warnings, etc.

Once that's verified then it's time to check other things like ignition switch and whatever else the electrical guru Andrew says.
