A quality hardwood floor should stand up to minor spills like you're talking about. We have dogs and the water spills at the water bowl that go with it and have no problems. 3/4 solid walnut. Other hardwoods if properly installed, finished and maintained should last a lifetime. The important thing to true longevity is maintenance. Keep the floors clean, put rugs or mats down at sinks or areas of countertops that people frequently stand at and have the floors screened and recoated every five years. That last one is the bitch.
