I too was going down this same path when my viscous fan clutch failed - in my case the bearing(s) went bad...

In the end I got a great deal on a new Hella viscous clutch (out of the UK), so I moved on to other maint items.
Also, while running with no fan for a week or two (in winter) I found the M57TU engine acoustic cover got uncomfortably hot along the front edge with no fan constantly pushing low velocity air over the cover. I'd seen a few melted covers, so I dropped the idea of the electric fan mod.
