my X5 was born before large water bottles were a "thing"
In 2001, cupholders weren't as prevalent as they are today, nor were large capacity water bottles that we've become used to in 2021. So, when I recently acquired my X5, I was not surprised on how small (and few) were the cupholders in it.
Two in the console and two for the rear-seat passengers (if any). Adequate for grab-and-go small plastic water bottles from the gas station or convenience store, but not for regularly-used coffee mugs for commuting, nor for tote-along insulated water bottles that many people always use.
If I travel for any trip over 20 miles, my water bottle comes with me...usually filled with my sweet peach tea mix (yes, a Southern thing). I made (Redneck-engineered) custom cupholders for my 2500 HD pickup and the HHR Panel, but the X5 needed something less home-made (for its' dignity). Therefore I installed a cupholder-adapter, made for large cups and specifically for 40 oz insulated water bottles.
Though my other custom adaptations aren't usually added to BMW-class vehicles, I did try at least to make them less gaudy.
