Don't overlook the subtractions made to your bank account while adding to the project book.
I've only owned my X5 for <3 months, and driven it <50 miles, but I've spent $$$ on the "little" things: - panel fasteners & pry tools,
- more metric tools (needed for anticipated use on X5, not needed on other cars),
- specialty fan removal wrenches (not used),
- everything else needed to convert it to an electric fan (including using a dedicated smartphone to accurately monitor coolant temperatures),
- basic seat covers (to protect original leather seats) & floormats,
- light bulbs & lenses (license plate lights),
- replacement intake tube replacement,
- headlight renewal kit,
- (unbent) tow hook,
- basic necessities for any of my vehicles (fire extinguisher, worklight/flashlight,
- spare fuses & fan relay,
- onboard basic toolkit (including scan-tool with BMW programming added),
- extra coolant and oil onboard,
- registration and insurance costs (not needed on the Chevelle drag car I traded),
- and so on....
The previous owner had just gotten finished with major renewals/overhauls of cooling, suspension, engine (including Vanos , timing chain & guides), and driveline systems, that I shouldn't have to do again for awhile. It drives great, and there are no obvious items to renew quite yet. He just neglected to button-up loose panels and touch-up worn interior pieces before he traded it to me. The viscous fan noise didn't seem to be noticeable to him, but I'm more sensitive to those sounds, so it was replaced almost immediately.
Perhaps the BMW gods will smile on me, for intentionally asking for this X5, over newer/more capable offroad/cheaper to fix Jeeps that were available. I always wanted a BMW since the '70s, and this might've been my last chance to have one (at 70+).
