Not very common but actually I suffered this high pressure pump axle seal failure. When it failed it started to run on its own oil like when turbo has catastrophic failure. Luckily I managed to stall it. When draining oil 13 litres came out, so oil + 6 litres of diesel in sump. Renewed the HP pump and changed oil. Runs like nothing ever happened now about 50 thousand km after. For M57 it was just a proper flush.
