When the wall came down and Russia became less centrally controlled, the KGB/oligarchs/power structure grappled with how to control the media. They could no longer ban coverage, and hand people a script.

So instead that just flooded the populace with garbage. Heck, they had oligarchs that would fund entire news organizations just to pump out confusing stories. Not two or three versions but a dozen, some with a thread of truth... Honest journalists are posting truth, but there are so many conflicting versions that people just throw up their hands and say "It is unknowable- pass the vodka".


And then facebook came along.
