I've plenty about the short cable that runs from the DHC to the door lock/latch but I think this is the first time I've heard of this issue being related to the (much) longer cable running to the inner door handle.
Sound like the long belden cable suffered damage from repeated removal of the door card. Which isn't all that surprised - you need to juggel a number of parts when pulling these suckers apart!
