If you plan on DIYing a good scanner like the 510 and 520 is a must have tool. There are others. I have found the Foxwell scanners to be the most user friendly and intuitive. Clear the codes and see what comes back.

Does it crank every time and just not start on the first try sometimes or does nothing happen and then after some number of attempts it cranks and starts?
