I've still got my eye out for a manual (5 or 6spd) x5 that needs saving. Think it could be a very fun experience.

That's a great idea crystalworks. I have been trying to decide whether to replace them all or wait, but that's probably a good stopgap measure. They are still original, I think. (Only 118k miles)
I think it has a really good clutch and transmission. It drives very much like a tall car, and the engine, clutch, and transmission work well together. I bought it because it was the least truck-like vehicle that could tow my trailer, and while it is not a hot rod or even a sportscar by any means, it's fun to putt around in, and tows very well. I almost bought a $1500 broke-down 4.8iS last year to steal all of the fancy interior goodies from too. That one still stings, if it wasn't right when COVID started, I would have got it.
