Weird stalling Issue? Transmission?

That somebody will be me.

My first repair on my m54 was intake cam sensor.

The symptoms of a failing CPS especially intake are random stall at slow speed with increasing frequency and no related code (though usually will get odd random cylinder misfire code).

What happened to me was when I would be puttering along at a slow speed and let off the gas it would stall.

Two examples:

1) slow crawl looking for parking spot, off throttle to coast into spot, engine stalls before I turn it off like it read my mind.

2) waiting at a red light to turn left, light turns green I pull forward into the intersection but coast to a stop, when I off throttle the engine stalls.

Happened a couple times over a month when I first got my 01 e53 3.0. But after a couple months of owning the frequency went up to weekly; searching the internet with the unrelated random cylinder misfire code led me to xoutpost with somebody suggesting the CPS being at fault and they were correct. 9000 posts and 6 ¹/₂ years later I likely am coming full circle sending that same advice back into the world.

Use *only* OEM CPS. If you are on factory CPS I would change the exhaust CPS at the same time.

Oh: also screw fishing the cord under the intake that shit took 90 minutes the first time, when I did on my wife's e53 a year later I just routed the cord around the intake and took literally seconds!

Your symptom description is slightly different but you may have also experienced similar to what I described. I don't remember 100% certain if the second case the stall happened after I let off the throttle or while I just added a little throttle. In any case, at least five times over the years similar posts on the topic have 100% been the CPS on m54 so you likely have your culprit.
