Update on this!
It was a bad earth all along!
If you install the Mercedes wiring loom do not use the mounting bolt for the light unit as an earth! It is insufficient! I soldered onto the earth in the plug and it's working fine now.
The reason I didn't suspect the earth was because the right side worked fine!
