Coolant Hose Split-Is This a Typical Blowout? Replacement Tips?

2003 X5 4.4 (v8), 135k miles.
This is the coolant hose that attaches to the back of the engine. Is this a typical way a hose splits open? I would have expected it to split across following the clamp.

Going to replace all the hoses back there (2 attached to the back of the engine and 3 attach to the firewall) while I am at it. I don't see any other way to do this except pull the manifold for easy access to those connections in the back. I welcome any tips/tricks for replacing these hoses.
