This thread hits close to home. Decent Indy BMW shops are hard to find around me, so over the years I’ve taken the X to some very reputable Porsche/Audi shops. Often they get it right, but in several instances they have missed the mark by a wide margin…a few years ago I had to completely redo a valley pan job. Leak was back within 6 months. On another occasion they forgot to torque the subframe stiffener. That will get your attention when you figure out where the clunking is coming from, and then think about the 50 or so miles you’ve put on the car with those bolts finger tight.
I always leave my Bentley book in the car when I drop it off at a shop, which isn’t often any longer, but sometime I can’t stomach another axle job, etc.
