I did that. The visual inspection tells me there is plenty of pad left when the sensor is touching the rotor. Six months ago when the light turned on, the fronts did not look low enough to trip the sensor, so I finally got around to changing the rears about a month ago and now my fronts appear to be tripping the sensor too.
