I had a similar problem.
The Check Engine light (SES) went on and the X5 started to stumble, I pulled off the road while playing with the throttle to keep it alive and pulled over.
Car died. I restarted it once and then had it towed home.
I checked the codes with my
'Creator C310' OBD2 Diagnostic Scanner Tool for BMW, Multi-System Code Reader.
and got
Multiplication mixture adaptation, bank 1, control limit reach
Multiplication mixture adaptation, bank 2. control limit reach
I erased the codes, and then started the car, it idled for 2 seconds and then it died again.
After researching the internet and forums I went down the path of vacuum leaks and possible dirty or faulty MAF sensor.
In both cases that was not the cause. I checked all vacuum lines the best I could and I even replaced the intake MAF sensor with a brand new one.
It still wouldn't start.
I checked the fuel pressure at the rail using pen on the schrader valve attached to the fuel rail and had little to no fuel pressure, even after I had turned the key. At this point I suspect the fuel pump. I was able to check power to the fuel pump using my scan tool and still had no fuel pressure at the rail.
I took it to an independent BMW shop in Burbank, Bavarian Built Auto.
They where able to activate the fuel pump with their scan tool and confirm low fuel pressure at the rail with a fuel pressure gauge. The pump was barely working.
They p
ut a complete new Fuel pump assembly unit in it with new fuel pump and the car was fixed. Car runs stronger than before.

3)Multiplication mixture adaptation, bank 1 control limit reach

The car stalls when I just start it and sometimes it takes a couple of tries to get it started and idiling. Sometimes it idles pretty rough and then it goes away. Also the car stalls when im driving, usually when I break and come to a complete stop.
At first i thought the problem was with the Air Mass Flow sensor, so i bought one on ebay and changed it. The "SES" came off, but after about 5 miles worth of driving, it came back on and the problem was worse than ever. It's possible that the Air Mass Flow sensor is bad, but I'm not sure. Please give me some advice and share your knowledge, becuase I can really use the help.
Thanks a lot in advance.
