Have you looked at the attached PDF? Sounds like you missed it - it shows the process of tensioner removal and install but does not mention lifting the engine. There're lots of info here on how to lift the N62 engine on an X5 - I've done it before when replacing the engine mounts. Take a look at the tensioner itself and you'll see there's insufficient space for it to come out.
