I decided to just bite the bullet and remove the front diff to have proper access for both inspection and repairs.
I was able to remove the differential without touching the subframe at all. It barely came out, but it did.
I have a few pictures here, to completely and confidently exclude anytning eating from OFHG, oil pan gasket etc.
