I ended up swapping with a car that was totaled.

I found a video of a teardown though from a guy that fixes them.

My phase one was going to be turn the gear by hand until it was set for sport allowed and then I'd just have to manually move out of m/s.

The swap was painless, took about 15-20 minutes including putting the broken one info the host car. They were about $300 on eBay at the time which was my motivation to repair. I'm sure they use a similar motor as the DLA so I was prepared to do the motor swap but I ended up not needing to do it.
