It's common - older Mercedes have the same issues, as do a few other Euro brands - and even some Asian brands. But it IS location specific. Heat is the killer - my car has spent it's entire life in a very termperate location and all the rubber and plastic is like new.

I think the BMW wiring looms are made (up) in Mexico but I don't know where the actual wire stock comes from.

Just be grateful it's not soy-based wiring and attracts rodents - although rodents DO still chew wiring up in some cases.
