E53 N62 Post if you have greater than 260K
Good catch n62. That motor should be even more reliable long term with the split timing chain but needs more upkeep in the VSS Department. It does also need preventive maintenance in the chain tensioner department. t's when left unattended to when the chain guides fail it has a different type of fault where the chain literally becomes a chain saw and starts cutting though the timing gear.
I've read of handfuls of N62 in the mid 200,000 miles but always after vss job that is apparently inevitable on that motor though I don't know the timeline of miles/years.
I was expecting to have to find that out when I thought n62 was going to be my next power plant when I leap frog by forced hand (deer killed my e53) and ended up with N55. It's got less power but more speed due to clever use of lots of gears (8) and wide ranging twin vane single turbo.
I really didn't want turbo or Valvetronic ended up with both go figure!
4.6 was my goal motor but it was literally more expensive to get 2006 than a 2011 and on trips where I get 27mpg and when I get 21.5 avg mixed driving I'm happy with the outcome.
Just planting some seeds for that eventual need to change chassis. There are things I still miss a lot about my e53 but I've worked through the misgivings and and have found peace.
I'm really not looking forward to the eventual F15/G05 phase. I do not like the iPad stuck in the dash look or worse the button vs. stalk cruise control or the wrong side of the wheel volume control.
So: back to topic: keep that n62 running long as you can the chassis and the motor are wonderful! I don't love the work it takes to get into the timing gear and the relative risk of the first gen Valvetronic but once you get over a certain age I think it's a reasonable long running plant. Should only have to do VSS once and change the tensioners enough you should never have to change the guides.
