Don't hit the MAF with a screwdriver (why would anyone even do this?) and don't unplug the MAF with the car running

If you suspect a vaccuum leak you can unplug the MAF with the engine off and start it. If it performs better, you have a vaccuum leak and you should get it smoked tested.
