If you suspect a vaccuum leak you can unplug the MAF with the engine off and start it. If it performs better, you have a vaccuum leak and you should get it smoked tested.
Because a bad film will show up as a stumble and hitting it doesn't mean beat the shit out of it either....

Common sense.
