Centrifugal forces and driving not in dirty and wet will keep the joint fairly clean for a short time. When repaired all the grease is removed and replaced.

I've driven quite a while with a split boot and it survived until i re grease and replace the boot.

If the outer CV boot, is not an expensive part to replace the whole thing.
