I have a weird issue with my fuel gauge on my X5 diesel.


So, lets say i put 20 litres of fuel in the tank, the fuel gauge needle will show that and it will also tell me how many miles that i can drive.
As i drive and use the fuel the needle slowly comes down until i get to almost an empty tank and the amber light comes on.


If i then put lets say 40 litres of fuel in the car the fuel gauge needle goes past the middle point and i am getting a reading of how many miles the car can do.


The issue is then the needle stays there. It does not come down as the fuel is used up.
So it looks like my fuel tank is 50% full.


The way i resolve this is to open up the fuel tank and remove the level sensor and just clean it and place it back in the fuel tank. Then everything goes back to normal.

It is almost like the float in the fuel tank is getting stuck somewhere, even though upon inspection it is free moving.


Has anyone else had this issue before?
