If I'm not mistaken the separate support plate on manual version has a thru hole in that location for the extra coolant connector on radiator (where as the automatic version has a coolant passage. If that support is not modded it will prevent any plug on the outside of the coolant connector. So internal thread and plug with o-ring (like on the bleed nipples) would be the best solution.
