It’s quite hard to get a gas tank to even catch fire much less explode. Clearly too risky to take that chance.

Myth busters tried with tracer rounds and i think it took until enough rounds went though gas spilled on the ground and vaporized then more tracers went through it finally ignited.

Jay Leno famously lit himself on fire with spilled gas under an engine so there is certainly risk. Vapor is the risk. Working with gas, breeze is important, use a fan if not outdoor.
