Our 2001 3.0 Sport 5 Spd manual has run very, very well over its 25 life, for us...

A few non-maintenance repairs, over the decades, but practically the 'costs' have been minimal imo, for a car that is this old, has ~145,000 miles and has never been 'babied', though I have maintained it well, imo.

I continue to drive it near daily, here in my Geezer/RetiredBumDom years and I think I would get in it and do a very long trip in it, if 'I' could stand doing a long trip, , but would really not worry about it 'getting there'.

My wife/CEO has her 'third' BMW Suv in the past 9 years, and none of those three can carry my ol'E53 bag, except maybe for better mpg, which is really of no consequence for us.

I am knocking on my 79 th yearand time is ticking, and I could buy any new car I wanted to without even pinching our nest egg...But few to none out there in new car land really excite me, fwiw.

This 25 yr old X5 and my 24 yr old Vette Vert are the two best cars I have owned in ~ 62 yrs of lots of different cars, in my experience.
