I had to google how they work. So when the tie tries to unravel it pulls the ball back into the narrow end of the channel and presses against the strap, locking it into place.
The ball travelling back a bit before it locks naturally creates some slack.
I came across a vid where a guy demonstrates pushing the ball inward with a jeweller's screwdriver while holding the strap tight. The strap locks quicker and with less slack that way.
