Sorry about all the questions, but I'm coming to discover that what my BMW mechanic said was not possible, appears to be not only possible, but actually fairly straightforward. What bothers me about this is that he's worked on my cars for more than 10 years, has become sort of a friend, and was just recently promoted to shop foreman. I've always taken his word as gospel.
