Others know a lot more about this than I do. I'm still formulating a "plan of attack" for upgrading my DSP system.
If you want to keep the factory DSP amp and DSP functionality, you have two options:
1. Just upgrade the speakers. This is possible (there are kits - search the boards). However, you'll need to be careful about matching the speakers to the amp. You can, apparently, install a subwoofer with its own amp but the rest of the speakers in the car will be driven off the factory amp.
2. take the amplified signal from the DSP amp and convert it back to a line level signal so you can send it through aftermarket amplification. No problem at all if you have the $. There are 12 channels that will need to be converted and amplified. You can save $ by summing some of the channels together, but you'll do that at the expense of additional signal processing.
My installer and I are still compiling a components list for my installation. I'll post pix when I'm done but that's probably 2+ months away. There are other members who have done this and have posted pix and descriptions. here is one:
