Hmmm, not sure, but I don't think one could drive with the top half of the arm rest open.....I guess you could put a 12 oz can and keep it "KEWL"!

The cup holders on the 3-series are like the E60 5-series....pop-out cup holder on the dash ala current 5-series.

Also, the E90 3-series rear arm rest has a pull out for 2 more cup holders.
