So that's why the Germans drive on the "right" side..as proven twice in the last century, they really hate the French...

I had heard the British custom derived from the days of the horse and carriage. You mount and dismount from the "near" (left) side of a horse. Thus, to keep your leggings clean, when dismounting, you'd move to the sidewalk to dismount. Clean leggings. Never mind you hadn't bathed or flossed your teeth in three weeks, at least your leggings were manure-free.
