My suggestion is to look for a reputable PGA pro for some lessons before you buy any gear. Take the first set of lessons with rental gear. Only after you know how to swing the sticks properly, and make good contact with the ball, can you appreciate one set of clubs over another. Ask the pro you take lessons with to hook you up with a high quality used set at his club pro shop.
If you don't take the lessons, chances are you won't enjoy the game and whatever clubs you buy will end up in the lake anyway.
This advice is not from an expert. Just someone who regularly wants to throw his gear in the lake.
