Actually, our subway system
AKA Metro is VERY easy to understand and it doesn't have that many trains/stops as NYC has.
I don't know how close to the action you want to be, but the Willard Intercontinental and Hotel Washington are 2 blocks from the White House. If you have mad coin$$$ and you want to be right across Lafayette Square from the White House, the
Hay Adams is where you want to be.
Guests of the X5World DC Meet stayed at the
Ritz Carlton Pentagon City, which is 2 Metro stops from the airport, and 6 stops from the White House or the National Mall/Capitol Building.
There are plenty of Hilton/Embassy Suites/Marriott hotels in the same area as well, which are convenient to the Metro.
