made it to castillo de juan!
gonna spend tonight here, and continue on shortly.
yes, about 180 miles into the trip, had a sudden blast of wind noise and the top deformed and opened. jettisoned 1 bag of clothes (recovered unharmed) and a picture frame laid flat on top which was destroyed. it contained a diploma which was shredded but recovered.
damn box was locked and double checked twice. there is NO speed restriction on the website or the instructions. i was going between 80 and 84 and blammo. the box was underloaded and not overstuffed. the other stuff in the box stayed put.
jsut drove 1200 miles to juan's. the rear hinge got mangled in the air stream as i tried to pull over. its pulverized. the box cover is secured to the box using ratchet straps. this has immobolized the top to the box which continued to want to pull up when going 80 mph. this was accomplished by placing a ratchet strap all the way around the front to the back bar in the middle.
this is UNACCEPTABLE. when i bought the box, i specifically asked as this was a concern of mine. yakima will hear about this. i was especially concerned about the non-redundant and very simplistic locking mechanism. and it failed.
will keep you posted.
juan and liz are jet lagged, and i am exhausted. will post more tomorrow.
