I've been there few times, but many friends are from there.. I could only guess two reasons for intellectual atmosphere...
1. Good Coffee (helps people up)
2. Bad weather (helps people stay home and read more unlike people from So. Cal here)
Still San Jose beats the highest household income catagories.
