The MkIV is SO fussy about what it will read; I have recovered a 'bad' disk by re-writing it with some care on the PC - even easier if you save the image out to the HD 1st and set the copying tool to attempt to resolve any errors - it will either keep trying or will report as unrecoverable.

Exactly.
Most DVD's that the Mk IV won't read can be read perfectly in a PC DVD drive. So you copy the DVD to an ISO image on the hard drive and then re-burn it on a good quality DVD at slow speed (or whatever works for the drive/DVD combination).
