Do you have to be a registered buisness for this?

What about people who drive for a living? When I go back to school this fall, I'm thinking about taking up some contract work there too, part-time. Basically driving around the area for a wifi positioning system company on the east-coast collecting data in the area.
In theory, you can write off most of the expenses you are referring to. I suggesting discussing with your CPA or tax preparer as you are getting into specifics to your situation.

You don't need to be a registered business to deduct expenses incurred to help you generate the income. Where they go on the tax return (Schedule A, C or E as UPE) is the real issue.
