i know people want to know how to disable the chime, but how do i get it so it doesnt go off pointlessly?

items that have set off the sensor:
gatorade bottle half full of gatorade
fire helmet
bookbag
a book
a shopping bag of clothes(2 button down oxfords and a pair of khakis)
a bag from mcd's(#1 value meal)


can ANYone help me here? it's driving me nuts and the dealer refuses to believe me.
