What likely happened is the previous owner upgraded the nav computer from the MkIII (which is CD-based) to the MkIV (which is DVD based). Consider yourself fortunate, as the MkIV is much faster then the MkIII.

There is no factory XM option, but BMW does offer Sirius. You would need to upgrade your radio module in order to have this capability.
