Since you have an '04 with Assist the extra cable you found is the antenna cable that goes to the eject box. It isn't connected to anything, which explains why you have no improvement in signal stength when the phone is snapped in. If you are not using assist you can disconnect the cable from the assist module and connect it to the cable that goes to the console. If you are using assist, you'll need to add a second antenna. I installed the X5 bumper mounted antenna and some others have used window mounted antennas.
