They are. ZF makes most of the later model year auto transmissions for BMW.
Roundel talks about this all the time...
Since BMW started picking up the tab on service, fluid changes have been stretched to as long as possible. Automatic transmissions can't be expected to last 50,000-100,000 miles with so few transmission fluid changes.
