The white plug on the TV/Video module supports the extra A/V inputs and outputs, so I am pretty sure that it is non-essential. However, you will probably want to create that plug at some point so that you can fully benefit from the module. You can buy the individual parts from BMW or just make it from the BMW part number 61.12-8 381 219. Here is a post that shows the pinouts of the white plug.

You also need to get the "Board Monitor" radio module to get any audio. The BM radio mounts in the trunk, along with the other nav/TV components, and all of the audio feeds go into the radio. So, to listen to CD (or TV for that matter), you need to get a radio module.
