I don't think racial profiling is "right." I also don't think that "right" has anything to do with safety.
There are no clear answers to this issue. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. For now, I say, DON'T...
If this war gets UGLY.. And it's starting too. We might have few choices but to do some bad things as a society as a need for survival. I hope however we refrain from doing so for as long as possible.
There are some things that can not just be "undone".
It's like torture during wartime. Sometimes, I can understand, why it may need to be done. If someone has information that can save the lives of hundreds or thousands, I could understand why they might be tortured, if they with hold vital information.
But I also think the people doing the torturing should be punished for doing it. I know it doesn't make a lot of sense.
I don't think the idea of a civilized society is one that allows an enemy to take advantage of it's own system. I do think however that a civilized society is one that only takes away human rights and freedoms when it is absouletely neccessary to it's own survival. -- We may unfortunately wind up in a world war that is this religion vs. that religion ("god" I hope not..)
But until such time that there is "no other choice" but to take away freedoms, I hope we choose to do what ever we can as a society to prevent racial profiling. And to label people by there skin color, last name, religion and wardrobe is not something we as a civilized society should take lightly. (remember the Japanese interment camps during WWII?)
And yes, maybe there was a need for the camps (national security) after Pearl Harbor. But I don't think we are there yet.
If we were living in Israel I might have a different opinion, but lets not call everyone from the middle east a suspected terrorist.
