I'm in the same boat.....I will have to wait for April production to replace my wife's E53 with the E70 because we want the Automatic Tailgate (and possibly the Mineral Green color). The E70 will still have a split gate, but the bottom portion will be shorter and the top portion taller than the E53's. On the E53 the tail lights and license plate were on the bottom half of the gate, but on the E70 they are on the top portion.
Also, in my experience when BMW gives these SOP dates it usually does not change, at least not for the earlier, but sometimes it does get delayed beyond those dates. I was ready to buy an E60 when it first arrived in the US back in the fall of 2003, but I had to wait a full year so that options like NAV, HUD, SAT Radio and Bluetooth became available. So I ended up getting a Sep. 2004 production car.
I don't know much about leasing, but is it not possible to extend the lease on a monthly basis for a few months until the Automatic Tailgate becomes available?
