Just had the same problem with our 01 X5. The final stage resistor went out on the A/C for the 2nd time. Seems to only last about for about 2.5 years or 30,000 miles. Covered under extended warranty. Last week the battery went out. 5 year old battery was about due. Everything seems to be running fine now.
