It takes less energy to refine diesel from oil than gas and diesel is 20 to 40% more efficient than gas so why is there not more diesel cars in the USA? I believe the main reasons are a) In the USA Diesel is still often associated with dirty polluting trucks b) Diesel in the USA is much less refined than in Europe and consequently modern European diesel engines would not work as efficiently
